Severe Weather Flash Flood Risk Today As Cold Front Arrives
Severe Weather Flash Flood Risk Today As Cold Front Arrives
It has been weeks since we have strung together 2 days in a row without thunderstorm and rain risk. That trend remains as today we are seeing the next in a series of cold fronts moving into the Eastern US. This opens the door to severe weather risk this afternoon and evening and the Storm Prediction Center has Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England in an area of marginal risk. This area extends from Virginia to Northern New England. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible in this zone. There is a chance we could see an area of slight risk added for New England later today.
We also have the issue of flash flooding. This is a situation where the ground is saturated and rivers have reached maximum capacity so even a quick thunderstorm that dumps a half inch or an inch of rain could be enough to set off flash flooding. Rainfall forecasts are all generally under an inch but amounts could be double the forecast in heavier thunderstorms.
Most of today will be hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s. We also have hazy sky conditions as wildfire smoke from Canada returned yesterday and will be around again today. Thunderstorms will develop and move through from west to east late today and tonight. Not everyone will see thunderstorms so there will be variability with this system. This is not going to produce a widespread area of heavy rain and flooding.

This front will move offshore tonight and slow down as all the weather fronts have this summer. It will basically fall apart. Showers and thunderstorms will end tonight with lows by morning in the upper 60s to mid 70s. Wednesday will be a partly sunny day. There is the chance for an isolated thunderstorm. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.
Humidity levels will edge a little lower Wednesday as dew points drop into the mid to upper 60s. That is uncomfortable but less uncomfortable than dew points in the 70s. Everything is relative! Then we move on to Thursday where once again the 2 day rule of weather fronts arriving is in play again.
Thursday brings the next cold front so it will be another day of partly sunny skies very warm and very humid with the chance for thunderstorms. There is the risk Thursday we could see some severe weather and it is also likely that there is risk for flash flooding. We will evaluate the risk over the next 2 days as to whether it needs to be elevated. Thunderstorms will move through later in the day and into Thursday night. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.
This front looks to move offshore and keep moving leaving us with an upper trough to deal with Friday. We will leave the chance for showers and thundertorms in the forecast Friday though they should be scattered in nature. Highs will be in the 80s. We are optimistic for the weekend that we may actually have two nice days and that we will also see dew points drop into the upper 50s and lower 60s which will really feel good. Both Saturday and Sunday should be no worse than partly sunny with highs both days in the low to middle 80s.
