Wet Snow Rain Wednesday Coating to a Few Inches

Saturday Strong Storm Rain To Snow To Wind

We managed our way through last nights fast moving line of thunderstorms and now we are going to see a dry and much cooler Tuesday. Yesterday temperatures in many places away from the coast reached highs well into the 70s. Today we will be 25 to 30 degrees lower as highs will just be in the 40s. We see some leftover clouds on the satellite picture this morning. There are some snow showers in the colder air to the north in Upstate New York. We don’t expect that to be an issue for our area today.

Low pressure will be moving off the Mid Atlantic coast and pass to the south and east Wednesday. We have margainl cold air overhead so we look for some wet snow to develop tonight in most areas. Southern New Jersey could see a mix or just rain from this. Further north as we straddle between temperatures of 32-35, we expect mostly wet snow. It falls during the day on Wednesday and we do have a warm ground plus sun angle issues. Unless we see see bands of heavy snow falling at rates of an inch an hour or more (we don’t expect this), we are looking for accumulations of a coating to a few inches mainly on colder surfaces. Some higher amounts could occur in elevations above 1000 feet.

This all ends Monday evening as the low pulls away to the east. Then skies should clear out with lows Thursday morning in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Thursday will see some sunshine. Friday we look for sun and arriving clouds. Highs Thursday will be in the 40s to near 50 and Friday we should be into the 50s.

All models are pointing to a major storm developing in the Eastern US Friday night and Saturday. Low pressure comes out of the Gulf States and moves up the coast and intensifies rapidly along the way getting very strong when it reaches New England. We will see rain developing during the early morning hours with an increasing south wind. Then as the low goes by with an upper trough move through, colder air will come rushing in on the backside. I think we could see a change over to accumulating snow for a few hours especially inland north and west of NYC and Philadelphia. It might even occur along the coast. The bigger story will be increasing winds to gale force and I’m expecting winds gusting to 40 to 50 mph Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Temperatures will start the day in the 50s and likely finish down in the 20s and lower 30s later in the day. Sunday will be windy and very cold. We will be watching this system closely in the coming days to zero in on the specifics of the outcome.
