Tranquil January Weekend
With all the energy running around in the atmosphere, it did not line up for another major snow event for anyone. The weekend for the entire area looks tranquil for the most part. Today has the only issues with the Great Lakes upper air disturbance that is kicking out a coastal storm to the east. The disturbance could produce a few snow or rain showers today as it comes through with a shot of so-so cold air that will come in quick and go out quick. Any precipitation that falls today will be light and with temperatures forecast above freezing during the day there are no sticking issues in most places.There is always the outside chance the ground could get whitened in a few places if a heavier snow shower were to develop but I don’t think it even warrants the label of cheap thrill after a 2 foot plus blizzard.
Tranquil January Weekend Satellite and Radar Loops
You can see the disturbance crossing the Northeast today while the radar loop below shows some snow shower activity developing to the west. Once we get through the evening hours it will all be done and gone. Skies should clear out tonight. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s and low 40s today and in the 20s tonight.
Saturday milder air will begin to arrive aloft producing a few clouds. Temperatures will be in the 30s to around 40. Sunday we should see some sunshine and clouds with highs in the 40s to near 50. All of this to me sounds like a tranquil January weekend.
Long range we have a cold front that will approach on Monday. Models differ on whether the front comes through or not with the GFS bringing it through while the European up through Thursday afternoon does not. This will make a big difference in the Monday and possibly Tuesday forecast as if the GFS model is correct it sets up an onshore flow and chillier temperatures Monday into Tuesday while the European keeps it mild with temperatures Monday in the 50s. Up until now I’ve been leaning toward the European’s idea ahead of what will be a major storm for the upper midwest.
Tranquil January Weekend Midwest Blizzard Tuesday Night & Wednesday
Tuesday should be dry but Wednesday that strong cold front will bring some heavy rain and temperatures could reach the 60s in many areas. Behind the front colder air returns and all the long range models show cold air hanging around for awhile. This should set the wheels in motion for a return to winter weather in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states.
