Thunderstorms Moving Southeast Severe Weather Risks Into Friday

Pleasant Cool Weekend

We are transitioning to warmer and more humid air mass and on the satellite loop we are seeing thunderstorms this morning in upstate NY and there are a few severe cells in the mix. As of 5am these storms are reaching peak intensity as they move southeastward and then southward so look for some possible downpours and one or two thunderstorms until these storms play themselves out. Areas to the south across Southern New Jersey and Southern Pennsylvania will likely miss out on these storms while to the north they will be impacting the morning rush hour drive.

Later on today we will see some sunshine break through the clouds and that should take temperatures up to the middle and even upper 80s especially inland. The first of two cold fronts will being approaching and that will trigger a slight to enhanced risk of severe weather but the main focus for potential severe weather will be well inland.

Areas well inland will benefit from ample daytime heating and a destabilizing atmosphere this afternoon and that is the reason for the enhanced risk. This is based on the Storm Prediction Center’s overnight forecast and it may be updated later this morning. We will pass that along on our Weather in 5 video later today. In the meantime we are going to use the HRRR model with the more bullish thunderstorm development idea for late today. The loop runs from 2pm this afternoon until 2am Friday so this places thunderstorms in the Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England zone between 9pm and 1am.

Once this front passes we will have leftover clouds with lows in the 60s. Friday sees another cold front that will move through around midday to early afternoon. There is a marginal risk for severe weather with that front when it passes though we expect a less developed line of thunderstorms with this front. Behind it we usher in very dry air later Friday afternoon. There will be some sun early and again later in the day with the front in between. Highs Friday will reach 85 to near 90 degrees making it the warmest day of the week.

The weekend is looking to be a pleasant one though definitely on the cool side. We have been nudging temperatures lower all week and we continue to take them down another notch or two. Low pressure over Nova Scotia and a strong high over the Great Lakes sets up a tight pressure gradient so look for sunny or no worse than partly sunny and breezy conditions for Saturday. Highs will be in the upper 60s in many inland areas and 70 to 75 everywhere else. Saturday night will be clear and cool with lows in the 50s and even 40s are likely north and northwest of warmer urban areas. Sunday will be sunny and still on the breezy side with highs in the low to mid 70s.  We will try to squeeze out a dry Monday before showers return on Tuesday.
