Thanksgiving Day Rain Gives Way to
An Early Winter Arrival of Cold Air Over the Weekend
Happy Thanksgiving to all on this rainy Thanksgiving Day. Given the drought situation getting rain for the second time in a week is actually a good thing even though it is a bit inconvenient if you are travelling about today. Rain is moving through Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Once we get through the steady rain this morning, we will see the rain end from west to east during this afternoon. This system is moving a little slower than advertised over the last couple of days.

A half inch to an inch of rain is doable today and once the low and cold front pass we should see weather conditions start to improve from west to east. There will likely be leftover clouds around and temperatures today are going to hover in the upper 40s to lower 50s much of the time while it is raining. It will be colder north of NYC where highs will just be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
This front ushers in our decent into rather cold conditions beginning Friday and then turning colder as we move through the weekend. A sustained cold weather pattern is locking into the Eastern US and this will leave us in the land of below normal temperatures for at least the 10 days. Skies will clear tonight with lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Friday we will have sunshine, a chilly northwest wind, and highs just into the low and middle 40s.
Average highs this time of year are in the upper 40s to around 50 and these numbers drop a degree every three or 4 days. We are looking at temperatures running 10 degrees below normal on average through the weekend. Saturday morning lows will be in the 20s to around 30 under a clear sky. Sunshine and clouds are forecast for Saturday with highs having a tough time getting out of the 30s.
Cold air continues to move southward thanks to high pressure to the northwest and a locked in northwest flow in the upper atmosphere from Northwest Canada and into the Eastern and Southern US. Sunday morning lows will be in the 20s everywhere and teens are likely in some colder areas inland. Sunday we will see clouds and sun and it will be very cold with highs not getting out of the 30s anywhere.
Get used to these cold temperatures because they continue next week. No snow is forecast for Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England except for perhaps the occasional snow shower inland. An intense lake effect snow event will get underway Friday along the lee shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Folks in Southwestern and North Central NY are the most vulnerable to multiple feet of snow accumulation over this 5 day period from Friday into next Tuesday. None of that is coming to the coastal plain. No storm systems are coming our way through much of next week thanks to overwhelming cold air and at least for now, not much if any room for storm systems to develop. Enjoy the holiday and happy shopping for Friday.
