Soaking Rain Thanksgiving Day Followed By
Sustained Cold Weather Into Next Week
If there is good news about a soaking rain for Thanksgiving Day, it is that we need the rain across much of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic. Anywhere from 3/4 inch to 1,25 inches is doable. The system is also a little faster so we may see weather conditions start to improve from west to east during Thursday afternoon. There are no weather issue today which is the big travel day. Weather conditions from Maine to Florida are on the quiet side and no precipitation is expect through this evening.
This leaves us with a day of increasing clouds from west to east. We can already see high clouds streaming out of the Ohio Valley and headed eastward. Radars are nice and quiet for now. As for temperatures they will be lower today than the last 2 days. Highs will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s.

Low pressure is coming out of the Tennessee Valley and heading northeastward through West Virginia and then moving right over Northern New Jersey and Long Island during Thursday. Rain overspreads the area from southwest to northeast overnight. There could be some heavier downpours in the mix during Thursday morning. Well inland, north of Route 84 we could see a mix in lower elevations and snow in higher elevations and Winter Storm Watches are up for the Catskills as well as areas across Southern Vermont, Southern New Hampshire and Southern Maine.
This storm systems starts the ball rolling for what will be sustained cold weather for the next 10 days to 2 weeks with below average temperatures. We have not seen a sustained cold like this in several years so it may be a little hard to take at first. Weather conditions however will be dry through early next week except for areas in Southwestern NY and North Central NY as a major lake effect snow event will be getting underway in these areas Friday and it will last into early next week. Snow accumulations will likely be measured in feet.
Friday brings cold air on northwest winds. We will see some sunshine though but temperatures will be hovering in the upper 30s and lower 40s for most of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. By Saturday morning most lows will be in the 20s everywhere with teens in the coldest spots inland. Saturday and Sunday we will see some sunshine both day. Highs will only be in the 30s at best. No snow is forecast over the weekend along the coastal plain so that will make return travel easier. Travel safely if you headed for Thanksgiving elsewhere and safe travels to those who have family coming to them, Happy Thanksgiving!
