Southerly Flow Today Showers Thunderstorms Thursday Very Warm Weekend

Long Island Outlook

We may be into June and the land continues to heat up but as always Long Island still has to deal with the cold ocean where water temperatures are still in the 50s to near 60. This will certainly impact temperatures today and especially Thursday when we will have some showers and thunderstorms to deal with. High clouds continue to stream eastward as the satellite shows. This will be another day of high clouds and some sunshine. Temperatures today on Long Island will reach a range of 70 to 75 with the exception of the South Shore and East End where highs will be in the 60s.

There will be some showers and thunderstorms that will develop well inland late today into this evening but they will not reach here so the entire day and evening will be rain free. Late tonight we are setting up for the next cold front slowly approaching from the west. A warm front sets up to our south and tries to move northward. This could set off some showers or a thunderstorms very late tonight into Thursday morning.

A warm front to our south will struggle to move northward and that will likely mean downpours and a possible thunderstorm ahead of the warm front Thursday morning as the NAM for 9am Thursday shows, and then we sit in clouds and an ocean wind for the rest of the day once these downpours move out by midday. As for temperatures they probably won’t make it out of the low and mid 60s with 50s along the shore and East End.

Thursday night brings the approaching cold front and that will produce some showers and thunderstorms overnight and lingering into Friday morning. Weather conditions will improve as the day wears on and perhaps some sun could return by afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 70s to around 80.

LONG RANGE OUTLOOK

The building ridge in the Eastern US remains on course. This ridge will strengthen over the weekend and into next week and that will being a stretch of increasingly warmer and more humid conditions. Saturday we will see sunshine but the humidity will be reasonable. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s.

Sunday begins what we define as hot weather as highs will reach the mid to upper 80s across the area with sunshine. The heat continues next week along with rising humidity and by Monday it will become truly uncomfortable. Daytime highs will depend on wind direction but inland 90 degree highs in Northern Nassay and Northwest Suffolk county are possible. Being under a strong upper ridge means that thunderstorm development will be minimal and isolated. It may not be enough to include it in the forecast from day to day. The ridge is forecast to break down enough to allow a cold front to approach late next week and put and end to the steamy conditions.
