The Solar Eclipse is Monday August 21st and the map above shows where the narrow band of totality lies and it is indeed narrow. Of course a ideally a clear sky is required and August can yield all sorts of results weather wise so let’s take a very early look at what weather models have to say regarding the weather on this day.

Here is a tight view of the path of the eclipse where totality lies on a line from about Portland Oregon southeast to near Charleston South Carolina. As far as the weather is concerned the GFS model is the only model that at this point goes far enough out in the long range.

The pattern on the GFS looks rather active along the East Coast which could mean showers are a risk. The recent trend of fronts stalling along the East Coast would not be a good sign for the Southeast US. Right now the area along totality shows only 2 small areas of clear skies possible or CSP. One in the Central Plains and Central Rockies and the other in a small area in the Pacific northwest. Now we also believe this will change somewhat but let’s see what the models do over the coming days with regards to this. We are not completely sold on the upper air pattern that the GFS is showing us. The European model has an entirely different look to the weather across the US and might provide a much different and much more favorable outcome. We will be updating this with more detail in the coming days.
