Showery Rains Today & Friday Well Inland Winter Storm Warnings Elevated Areas
We finally got enough rain to not only wet the ground but make puddles. As of 7am Thursday rainfall amounts from overnight were on the order of a half inch to an inch and we are still dealing with rain on the radar from Northern New Jersey, NYC and Long Island north and northeast. By the time we get to Friday evening rainfall amounts should total in the 2 inch plus range with less amounts south of NYC and more to the north. It doesn’t break the drought but it is a good start.
Along with the rain we have parts of the area that will be dealing with winter weather. Winter Storm Warnings are posted for Northeast Pennsylvania north to the Catskills. This is an elevation driven event and we see snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches for areas above 750 to 1000 feet. Some of the highest peaks could see up to a foot of snow.
The bulk of any snow will fall tonight and Friday as low pressure makes a counterclockwise loop over Southern New York, coupled with a strong upper air storm system driving southeastward from the Great Lakes. Heavy snow risks also set up over the Appalachians and we have Winter Storm Warnings from Southwest Pennsylvania to West Virginia.

WEATHER RADAR
This first arm of rain is coming to a grinding halt thanks to low pressure developing on the “triple point” of the wam, cold, and occluded fronts This prolongs the rain especially over Long Island and Southern New England. As the low makes that counterclockwise loop tonight and Friday, rain well inland changes over to wet snow. Expect on and off rain or showers for the rest of today through Friday. Areas just inland of the coast might even see some wet snow flakes or graupel mixing in.
As far as temperatures go, we will be settling into the 40s today and lower 40s well inland. Tonight areas that change to snow will drop to the 30s while areas getting snow will see their temperatures drop close to or even slightly below freezing. Friday highs will be in the mid 30s well inland and upper 30s to mid 40s elsewhere. Winds will pick up later in the day Friday and Friday night. Over the weekend we will see some slow improvement but it will be windy both Saturday and Sunday. Look for clouds and some sunshine Saturday and more in the way of sunshine Sunday.
