Severe Weather Risk Thursday, Dry Friday,

Memorial Day Holiday Weekend Outlook

We have a weather system an approaching cold front today and this is going to produce a few thunderstorms and some severe weather risk. The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk for severe weather from Southeast and Southern New England south to Delaware Maryland & Virginia and this includes all the big (and smaller) cities along the I-95 corridor.

We actually have a cluster of thunderstorms on the satellite and radar loops this morning and they will bring some rough weather to some but not all areas in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Once this plays through it will be a warm and more humid day with some developing sunshine and highs in the 80s everywhere. Another shower or thunderstorm is possible late today into this evening though the best chances could be south of NYC.

Weather conditions should improve later tonight and that takes us into Friday which is of course, getaway day ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Looking back on weather for this particular weekend, it is usually the one where it rains on at least 1 of the 3 days (Saturday through Monday), sometimes on 2 days, and every once in a while, on all three. Rare is the weekend where all three days are perfect.

What we can say about the holiday weekend is that much of the time the weather will be dry. There are weak weather systems running around that may bring some shower and thunderstorm chances along the way. Friday should be a dry day as the weather front moving through tonight is going to keep on moving, or at least move far enough south not to cause any issues.

We will see some sunshine developing for Friday and it will be a warm day with highs back into the 80s except for local sea breezes at the shore. Saturday dayside will be dry but there is one of those weak systems we spoke of that could bring a few showers or a thunderstorm late Saturday into early Sunday morning. Saturday will also be a warm day with high temperatures reaching into the 80s.

Sunday looks to be the best of the 3 days with sunshine and rather nice conditions for anything outdoors. Temperatures  Sunday will be reaching into the 80s. We will begin to see more of an onshore flow developing so while a beach trip is acceptable, bear in mind that temperatures will be at least 10 degrees cooler along the shore.

Monday i believe we will have issues. A strong low will be heading for the Great Lakes and this low will be strengthening some along the way. A cold front will swing eastward coupled with a strong upper trough. This opens us up to the possibility of thunderstorms Monday. It also I believe puts us at risk for severe weather issues. There is some uncertainty at this point as to how this all sets up but I should alert you that the risks are there for Monday Memorial Day.

Monday temperatures are going to hinge on how the front sets up. Look for highs in the 70s to some lower 80s. It is hard to say whether the risk for thunderstorms is early, late in the day, or possibly both. There should be some dry time either way. Next week also sees cooler than normal conditions developing across much of the Eastern US.
