Severe Thunderstorm Tornado Risk & Heat

Give Way to Lower Humidity Cooler Temps Next Several Days

This will be the last day of heat and humidity for awhile as we have a cold front approaching from the Northwest. This front coupled with an upper trough moving through Southeastern Canada set the stage for another round of thunderstorms, severe weather risk and slightly elevated tornado risk for this afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms should develop in clusters with scattered severe thundertorms in those clusters. As always with thunderstorms not everyone particicpates.

There will be sunshine and daytime heating to support thunderstorm development. Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer so far for many areas in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic. Today we will take the temperatures down a few degrees and rather than mid to upper 90s, highs today will be in the low to mid 90s or about 5 degrees lower. Humidity levels will be high again with dew points in the 70s.

Satellite loops and radar views are already showing some shower and thunderstorm activity in this region which is no surprise. We look for the possibility of severe weather watches going up later today as the front approaches. Much depends on how much daytime heating occurs as this creates a more unstable atmosphere.

Once the front passes it keeps moving southward and gradually over the next 4 days ( Sunday through Wednesday) we will see drier air overspread the Great Lakes and the Eastern US. It will be a bit of a stairstep decline with a shot of drier air and lower temperatures coming in for Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds. Highs Sunday will be in the low to middle 80s.

The core of the dry air will arrive later Monday and last into early Thursday. Dew points will be in the 50s and even in the 40s in some areas which is rather low. While there could be a scattered  shower or thunderstorm early Monday morning as we go from dry to drier air, much of the time Sunday through Wednesday should be rain free. Monday overall will be a nice day with most highs in a range of 78 to 84 and a fair amount of sunshine. Tuesday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

We will hold on to the dry air for Wednesday and early Thursday before dew points start to shoot higher ahead of a vigorous cold front that will pass later Thursday night and Friday. This front will likely produce widespread downpours and thunderstorms as it goes by and then it will be followed by another stretch of dry and delightful weather next weekend.
