Saint Patrick’s Festivities Last Weekend of Winter

Last night’s rather surprising burst of severe weather from NYC west and north is now long gone and we transition over to a weekend of Saint Patrick’s festivities over the next 2 days. This is the last weekend of the winter season. Next weekend at this time we will be sitting solidly in the new spring season. Spring is a season of volatility and sometimes the swings can be wide. Unlike last year when we transitioned from winter to spring in a stormy blocking pattern with heavy and in some cases record snowfall, this year is different with no blocking whatsoever. The upper air pattern resembles one where we get cold snaps that don’t last. The pattern also looks a bit drier at least through next week. Other than a nuisance low Monday morning that brings a few large wet snow flakes and rain showers, much of next week looks dry.

Satellite and radar looks show a cold front will be passing through this morning and we can see some snow showers in upstate NY with a bit of late season lake effect going on. This will lead to a day of sunshine and clouds here, a gusty wind, and highs only in the upper 40s to lower 50s. For many to day will be 15 to 20 degrees or more colder than yesterday. All Saint Patrick’s Day festivities today will come with a chill in the air but nothing much else to worry about. At least the warm March sun will take the sting out of the chill.

Tonight skies will be clear and temperatures will settle in the 20s to near 30 by morning. Sunday which actually is Saint Patrick’s Day it will be sunny but cold with highs just in the 40s but the wind will be a bit lower. Again no issues for Saint Patrick’s Day festivities day 2!

Early Monday morning a weak low that you can barely find in the Western Lakes will pass by just to the south off the coast and out. There will be little fanfare here. No development is forecast. The low isn’t going to turn northward and intensify…etc etc etc. We could see a few showers of rain or snow around Monday morning, otherwise look for clouds giving way to some sun with highs just into the lower 40s. Behind the low is a chilly high for Tuesday and Wednesday. We should see some sun both days with highs in the 40s. Thursday brings a cold front with perhaps a couple of showers. Then another shot of cold dry air for next weekend. Afterwards the pattern looks to turn warmer and a bit more active toward the end of the month.
