Snow Ice Risks Rise Thursday Night Into Friday
We have the next weather system making its way eastward. Clouds are rolling into and we will see some rain later today and into tonight. This system is tracking a bit further northwest than advertised a few days ago which means there will be less in the way of rain and wind. Look for rain to come in later this afternoon and evening but the bulk of that rain will be to the north (Hudson Valley, Catskills northward) where rainfall amounts are higher (up to 1 inch or more). To the south across Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey southward rainfall amounts will be on the order of a quarter to a half inch. We are beginning to see rain on the regional radar moving out of Ohio and into Pennsylvania and it will continue to move to the east.

We were wondering over the last few days whether we would meet wind advisory criteria along coastal areas. It looks as if we will be just below that but some winds will gust in the 30-40 mph along the coast briefly late today into tonight. Then as this system passes the rain ends overnight and we will see temperatures hold. Highs today will be in the 50s and we will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s overnight. This sets up a nice launching pad for Wednesday. Clouds will give way to some sunshine. Though a cold front passes later in the day it won’t have much with it. We could see record highs in the mid 60s to around 70 or so in some places.
Colder air comes in Wednesday night and by Thursday morning we will be in the 20s to near 30. Thursday clouds increase quickly with highs in the low to mid 30s. High pressure to the north will be pressing southward against the next wave moving northeastward. Snow and sleet will develop during Thursday evening. It will be intermittent at first and then become steadier overnight into Friday morning.
Much of the overnight guidance was a little colder with precipitation a little more robust. For much of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England, im more concerned with a prolonged period of sleet and then freezing rain which could be a significant issue just north and west of the immediate coast. The areas at the highest risk for a more serious icing event are across much of Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey north of route 78 into the Hudson Valley north of Route 287 and in Connecticut north of I-95. We could certainly see a quick few inches of snow before a change to sleet and freezing way gets underway Friday morning. We will discuss more specifics regarding this later today after the dayside models come out. It will turn colder over the weekend. There a still some hints around for some snow late Sunday into Monday. Models backed off a bit on this but the hints are still there. We will focus on that when we are done with the first two.
