Quiet Easter Sunday Major Storm Heading into the East,

Rain Snow, Severe Weather Beginning Tuesday

We have an absolutely miserable week of weather ahead thanks to a powerful spring storm that will be coming out of the Rockies and Plains and heading to the East Coast. This storm will produce widespread heavy rain, severe weather, and there is the risk for heavy snow in Upstate NY and Interior New England. However before we start dealing with this storm, we have a nice Easter Sunday for the most part. Enjoy whatever sunshine we get today because once it is gone, we probably won’t see it again until the end of the week or next weekend. High temperatures today will reach the 50s and no rain is forecast during the day.

Tonight we have a weak front and a wave that is moving along it. This will bring some rain in overnight into Monday. This first round of rain should end by mid morning to early afternoon from west to east and then we catch a bit of a break before more rain comes in later Monday night and Tuesday. Some of the rain Tuesday will be on the heavy side. This is all ahead of the main part of this weather system that will be crawling eastward.

Impacts from this storm system will be rather widespread across the US. We expect to see widespread severe weather break out over parts of the Plains, the Middle Mississippi and Ohio Valley Monday into Tuesday and we coulds see severe weather risk across much of the Eastern US Tuesday into Wednesday. A marginal risk reaches into New Jersey with higher risk levels to the south and west. These risk zones will come with elevated tornado risk.

Wednesday morning we see a very large are of 2 inches or more of rain in the Central Appalachians with 1 to 2 inches reaching into Southern New England and the Hudson Valley southward. Since the rain is somewhat spread out over 3 days, it may reduce flooding concerns but we need to watch the situation closely since thunderstorm risk means there is the risk for some locally higher amounts.

More rain is coming for Wednesday into Thursday as low pressure redevelops south of Long Island and heads for Southeastern New England. This is where we open the door for snow issues for areas in Upstate NY and interior New England. The Weather Prediction Center has an elevated risk of 70 percent or more of at least 3 inches in their long range outlook for snowfall in the Northeast.

Precipitation shifts northward into New England Wednesday night and Thursday so there may be some slight improvement in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England, however clouds will be an issue and there will likely be a few showers. In elevated areas north of Route 84, some wet snow could mix in. All week long look for raw conditions, and, yes it is a gloom & doom type of week with no sunshine forecast until probably Friday or perhaps next weekend.
