Near Record Highs Today & Saturday Then Showers & Colder Weather Arriving

We saw record highs set yesterday across parts of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England as highs reached the upper 70s and lower 80s. We are likely to do that again today though there are some clouds around streaming in from the west. Even the radars are picking up some very light sprinkles though much of that isn’t reaching the ground.

Overall we will go with the idea of a partly sunny Friday and temperatures once again will reach the mid 0s to around  or just over 80 degrees which once again will likely produce some record highs. We execpt radar echos to disappear but if you run into a brief sprinkle or shower today, just shrug it off because it won’t last.

We will see warm conditions tonight with lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s. This sets us up for one last day of very warm temperatures and record highs for Saturday. A west wind will take highs to the upper 70s and lower 80s. A weak front passes Saturday afternoon which basically tweaks the wind direction to northwest. Skies should be no worse than partly sunny for Saturday with no rain.

Sunday begins the decent downward in temperatures. It will come in steps as we have to wait for a cold front overhead today to clear the coastline. This may take the work of two waves of low pressure. The first approaches Sunday with cloudy skies and the risk for showers developing during the morning and continuing on and off into the Sunday night. The boundary cuts Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England in half so the further north you go, the higher the chance for showers.

The question is whether it will take one wave to get the front through or will it take a second wave to really drag down cold air into the Eastern US which is something that GFS says no, and the European says yes. The European model even suggests that the front Monday stalls to the southeast waiting for another wave of low pressure to move along it bringing a cold rain for later Tuesday and even some wet snow in the mix Tuesday night into Wednesday! After a run of record highs it would be fitting to go to completely to the other end. It is uncertain whether it would take a second wave but not unusual as this has happened many times in the past few months where fronts get hung up near the coast.

Sunday temperatures will have a rather wide range from the lower 70s for highs Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey southward and this zone probably doesn’t see much in the way of showers Sunday. Showers will be more numerous north from Northeastern Pennsylvania to the Hudson Valley and Southern New England where highs will be in the raw upper 50s and lower 60s. Showers will continue on and off into Monday and then we will deal with whether the front slows down and waits for another wave or keeps on going. Either way get ready for much colder air and a return to reality.
