NAM RGEM Video Analysis
The battle between the global and the short range models continues late this afternoon with the NAM and the RGEM Models shifting westward a bit more and this is supported by the SREF and a few others. This could turn into the 4th snow event for the east coast to shift westward at the last minute in the last 3 weeks. We have seen that happen all the storms this year and it just occurred with yesterday’s stalled cold front that brought up to a foot of snow over Long Island and Southern New England with lesser amounts west.
The above is the RGEM and the NAM 4KM models from late this afternoon. The nam is particularly aggressive on this and it takes the surface low north northeast from the this position. Track of the surface low seems not to be the determining factor here but rather the upper low in the Great Lakes which is drawing the precipitation shield northwestward. The short range models are different from the global models in that the global models are showing the Great Lakes system kicking the coastal low out to sea. This really is the essential difference between the two.
