Mother’s Day Forecast Looking Nice Sunny But On The Cool Side

We have reached the doorstep of the weekend and ahead of it today it is going to be nice, sunny and warm as temperatures reach the low and middle 80s. Looking at the satellite loop we can see that the northwest flow in the upper atmosphere continues and there is really no sign of it breaking down anytime soon. This at least prevents us from getting into gloom and doom weather patterns going forward.

The northwest flow however is still bringing down a smokey haze from the wildfires in Central Canada which is making for some spectacular sunrises and sunsets and a bit of a hazy sky filtering the sun during the day. That is going to continue as long as this northwest flow holds firm in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states.

Tonight into Saturday we have some breakaway energy from a system in the Plains that is moving over the Great Lakes and then sliding southeast from there to off the coast during Saturday morning. The northwest flow in the upper atmosphere prevents this from lifting northward up the coast. A similar system will follow Monday with Sunday, Mother’s Day lying in between the two.

The northern edge of this weather system cuts the rain off somewhere from a line from Scranton PA to NYC & Long Island. So roughtly north and east of that line there should be little or no rain at all. Rainfall amounts should be generally under a tenth of an inch or so where it does rain and that would basically be the southern half of Pennsylvania and New Jersey south of Route 78.

The disturbance moves offshore Saturday morning and that means that we will see decreasing clouds and increasing sunshine from north to south during Saturday afternoon. Areas to the north and northeast of NYC will break into sunshine sooner than areas to the south so highs will reach the low 80s in Southern New England while it will be in the mid to upper 70s just about everywhere else.

Winds will shift to the north during Saturday as that low to the southeast moves away. HIgh Pressure from Eastern Canada builds southward down the coast and that brings dry air and slightly cooler air for Saturday night and Sunday. Skies will clear out completely everywhere Saturday night with most lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Sunday Mother’s Day will be a beautiful day of sunshine which makes up for the last two years where Mother’s Day was miserable. Sunday highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Sunday night into Monday morning brings another system that will do the same thing as the Saturday morning system. It will move southeast from the Great Lakes to the Mid Atlantic coast and bring an area of rain that will probably cut off somewhere across Northeast Pennsylvania to Long Island. That means another period of rain south of that line and not much if anything to the north. This one will probably track a little further south thanks to the stronger high to the north so let us call it partly sunny for northern areas and cloudy to partly sunny for Central NJ and Southern Pennsylvania southward after any rain ends Monday morning. Highs Monday will be in the 70s. Other than a cold front coming through Tuesday night with the chance for a shower, much of next week into next weekend will be nice and dry.
