Messy Weak Storm System Monday Night into Wednesday Morning Snow Ice Forecasts
Let’s get the easy part of the forecast out of the way first. It is cold. It is windy. It will be cold overnight into Sunday morning. Skies have cleared out for the most part but the northwest wind remains busy overnight. Lows tonight will be mostly in the teens. Cold spots inland and sheltered valleys could see numbers in the single digits. Wind chills will drop to single digits to near zero. Clearly this is the coldest night of the winter for many.

After a busy week of lake effect and frontal boundary snow squalls and snow showers, the regional radars have finally exhausted themselves and have gone mostly silent. No additional snow showers should develop here into Monday morning and then the radars will focus their attention southward with the developing low.
Winds will begin to ease Sunday with plenty of sunshine and some late day high clouds. Highs will reach the low to middle 30s and most places. Then we turn our attention to a storm coming out of the Southern Plains and heading into the lower Ohio Valley on Monday.
I remain basically unimpressed. Low pressure heads eastward and a secondary develops offshore. Note how it takes all the solid moisture and radar echoes to the east rather than north. Southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Southern New Jersey see that first burst Monday evening before it falls apart and moves east. Areas to the north don’t see much from that and have to wait until Tuesday morning when snow from the dying primary low to the west moves in. Who knows what kind of snow we are talking about here as there really isn’t much upper support with this.
The National Weather Service snow forecast above is through Tuesday evening and there could be some snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The best way to look at this is that there could be a few inches of accumulation and then again some areas will see much less. Some inland could see a bit more. Trying to break it down here is almost impossible.
Areas from Central New Jersey southward into Southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware could go over to sleet and freezing rain Monday night into Tuesday morning so some ice accumulation is possible in these areas.
As far as the second storm for Thursday, this is certainly more impressive than the Monday Tuesday mess. Low pressure comes out of the Gulf into the Southeast US and strengthens into a major storm. Not much has changed today regarding this storm. We are still watching to see if the block weakens enough to allow this to come further north. No doubt this will intensify into a major storm along the Virginia coast. However the northern fringe will be limited. How far north is the big question. The first system likely will impact the second so we will have to see what comes of that before rendering a verdict on storm number 2.
