Long Island Under Severe Weather Risk Today,
Weather Improves Thursday Rain Developing Friday
Severe weather risks on Long Island are awlays a tricky proposition especially during the spring months. The cold ocean can shut thunderstorms down as they move across Long Island. They will be strong in Nassau County only to die out when they reach Suffolk County. It will depend on the wind direction and how much of an ocean component there is to that wind.
The wind will be southwest and then west southwest so highs today in Nassau County will reach the middle to upper 80s with temperatures trending lower as you head east and south. The satellite and radar suggest that there won’t be any thunderstorm activity here until late in the afternoon at the earliest. There could be some scattered thunderstorms that for ahead of the main line which will move through later this evening.

Once any thunderstorms move away, skies will clear out later tonight as a cold front heads south and high pressure builds in from the northwest. Temperatures overnight will be in the 60s. Humidity levels which will be high today will be much lower later tonight and for Thursday. Lots of sunshine is forecast for Thursday with highs reaching the lower 80s.
Friday is getaway day for the holiday weekend and we will see sunshine early giving way to increasing clouds. Rain develops later in the day and continues Friday night into Saturday morning. Some rain will linger on and off through the day on Saturday which is looking like a gloom and doom day, raw and dismal. Temperatures Friday will be in the 60s and once the rains come temperatures will settle in the 50s. We were cautiously optimistic for the second half of the weekend. We are going to hold on to that notion though weather models seem to be showing questionable weather conditions for Long Island for Sunday and even into Monday. We will look at this closer later today.
