Long Island Could See Minor Coastal Flooding From Hurricane Lee as it Passes East

Hurricane Lee will be passing to the east of Long tonight by several hundred miles. While the hurricane which has top winds of 85 miles an hour will no impact Long Island directly, we do have some issues to talk about. Coastal flooding at high tide could be an issue through Sunday. We have already been experiencing high waves along the ocean beaches and water levels are already high due to the new moon cycle. Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect for high tide and minor coastal flooding for the rest of the day and lasting tight into Sunday. The unknown variable here will be the storm surge and that is difficult to calculate. It will depend on the timing of the surge of water to the coast and the time of high tide. For now the flooding forecast is for minor coastal flooding but it could possibly be moderate in some places given this factor of the surge.

As far as clouds and rain are concerned, the satellite loops are showing clouds have already backed westward and this will limit sunshine today and highs will just make it into the low 70s at best. Also with regards to rain, radars are starting to pick up on bands of rain offshore. It is possible that some of that rain might reach Eastern Long Island tonight into early Saturday morning. If it does, we don’t expect it to amount to much.

As far as the winds are concerned, northerly winds will pick up a bit tonight into Saturday and we could see gusts up to 30 mph or so especially along the coast but this is nothing we can’t handle. Saturday any early clouds will give way to sunshine with highs in the 70s. Sunday looks nice and sunny to start but we will see clouds and the chance for showers or possibly a thunderstorm Sunday night. A cold front will be passing through. Weather conditions will improve Monday with some sunshine returning. Tuesday and Wednesday of next week look nice and sunny with highs mostly in the 70s.
