Elsewhere Northeast Colder Temperatures Snow Chances Next Week

Though we had some rain and wind overnight, the storm system underperformed on both counts which is good news. We did see some gusts over 40 mph in some places and rain was heavy at times, but on the whole, impacts were manageable. We do have Coastal Flood Warnings for this morning’s high tide and moderate to major coastal flooding is forecast but we will see winds from the west today and they will be 20 to 30 mph gusting to 40 mph at times. This should eventually help in pushing tidal water out.

As far as temperatures are concerned, the highs for the day will be acheived this morning as we see temperatures in the mid 50s to perhaps even getting to around 60 degrees in some places. However there will be an upper trough moving through around midday and once that goes by, temperatures will drop into and through the 40s this afternoon. By Sunday morning with clearing skies, lows will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Winds will ease a bit tonight but it will still be on the gusty side.

Sunday brings an upper trough our way and that will have colder air behind it. Ahead of it we will probably see some snow showers develop and perhaps even a briefly heavier snow squall. Otherwise it will be a day of self destructive sunshine giving way to clouds. Winds will remain gusty from the northwest, over 30 mph at times, and temperatures will be mostly in the 30s to around 40 in the warmest spots.

Colder air will be around for all of next week though conditions will vary somewhat from day to day. We will also have a couple of weather systems to look at going forward. Monday offers no issues as temperatures will be top out in the upper 20s and lower 30s and there should be a fair amount of sunshine. The first weather system of the week will be Tuesday as weak low pressure swings across the South bringing snow to the lower Tennessee Valley and the Southern Appalachians.

Tuesday’s system looks to be suppressed as colder air is tending to overwhelm much of the Eastern US, at least when it comes to the flow from Canada. I’m going to leave the chance for some snow in the forecast for Tuesday and Tuesday night though it seems that if it happens, it will be on the light side. Temperatures Tuesday will be in the 30s. Colder comes in for Wednesday and Thursday and both days might see highs only in the 20s to around 30. Major changes in the upper atmosphere are coming late this week that will lead to some warmer weather next week  Often times when such changes occur, a storm needs to form somewhere to move the process along. Models at this stage are hinting at a storm system at the end of the week (Friday into Saturday) but it could wind up being suppressed to the south and east the same way the Tuesday system is. Still it is early in the game to rule anything out and we will watch models today to see where they take us.

NFL PLAYOFFS COULD SEE THE COLDEST GAME IN NFL HISTORY TONIGHT

Tonight begins the NFL playoffs and weather is going to be a key factor. This could turn out to be the coldest NFL playoff game ever played and quite possible the coldest game ever. The Miami Dolphins are playing the Kansas City Chiefs at 8pm Eastern time 7pm Central time. The forecast temperature at game  will be below zero. Minus 3 or 4 to be exact and by the time the game is over, the temperature could be down to minus 8 to minus 10 degrees. Playing the entire game with temperatures below zero will be quite an experience especially for the Miam Dolphins. Home field advantage goes to Kansas City!!!
