Hurricane Matthew Near Myrtle Beach
This morning’s satellite loop shows Hurricane Matthew just on the coast as barely a hurricane. Winds have dropped off and the wind field has spread out considerably. There are strong winds to 50 mph occurring well inland. The big story going forward will be the heavy rain. Judging by the winds Hurricane Matthew is very close to Myrtle Beach.

Hurricane Matthew still has the pressure of a category 2 or category 3 hurricane but it is looking more like some sort of transitional tropical cyclone than anything else. But that is a matter for after the fact. For our purposes we can see showers from a cold front coming in from the west and some the northern fringe of rain from Matthew as far north as Southern Delaware.
Look for clouds to increase and thicken up and there will be some showers this afternoon moving into South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania. The front pushes east and wedges the rain to the coast. I dont think there will be too much rain north and west of a line from Philadelphia to Boston. But along the coast in Central & South Jersey, Long Island & Connecticut there could be about a quarter to a half inch of rain overnight into Sunday morning.
For Sunday Columbus day weather conditions will slowly improve west to east as you go west of the coast but for the New Jersey shore and Long Island there may some lingering rain or showers in the morning before skies slowly begin to clear out in the afternoon. Sunday’s highs will be in the 60s. Monday Columbus Day looks sunny and nice with highs in the low to mid 60s.
