Helene Turning West Into Tennessee Valley
No Risk Northeast Mid Atlantic Through the Weekend
It is the day after Hurricane Helene which made landfall last night as a category 4 hurricane near Perry Florida. Satellite loops show the core of the former hurricane is now swinging westward into the Tennessee Valley as heavy rains continue in the Carolinas westward to Tennessee and Kentucky. There is a lot of high level cloudiness that has pushed up into the Hudson Valley and Central New England. This leaves much of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England in mainly cloudy skies today. Radars are showing light rain has reached Southern New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania at least aloft. This rain is nothing like the big rains going on well to the south. Temperatures today will be mostly in the low to mid 70s thanks to clouds and the onshore flow.

WEATHER RADAR
Over the next couple of days the rotating remnant low of Helene will spin back to Kentucky and Tennessee and gradually weaken. The high to the north is keeping moisture as far south as possible but some patches of rain could move northward from time to time today and Saturday. With a little luck the rain bands will thin out so that there is minimal risk for rain by Sunday. The exception to this would be Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey where rain bands might have a little more moisture to them and keep things gray and dull through the weekend with occasional periods of rain.
We will likely need to wait until the middle of next week before the remnant lows is finally forced to move eastward and offshore and a cold front will be the catalyst to move weather systems along in the flow. This leaves us with clouds tonight and most lows in the low to mid 60s. Saturday we will see cloudy skies and the possibility of some patchy rain especially south. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s.
We will attempt to hold a little optimism that clouds will try to thin out some especially north of NYC and into Southern New England but it will be a tough sell. For now we will leave showers out of the forecast for Sunday and for Monday as well. Sunday highs will be in the low to middle 70s with an onshore wind.
Coastal flooding at high tides remains an issue as long as this onshore flow hangs on and that probably doesn’t change much until the next cold front passes Wednesday. Monday appears like it could be a dry day with some sun breaking through but we will be back with a chance for showers Tuesday into Wednesday as the next cold front finally sweeps everything offshore.
