Showery Rains Today From A Cold Front

While Hurricane Helene Charges Toward Florida & the Southeast US

All of the weather energy today is being spent in the Southeast US & Florida as Hurricane Helene heads for landfall tonight in North Florida. Then thanks to an unusually fast forward motion, we will see this storm move northward through Georgia and only weaken very slowly. This spreads hurricane and tropical storm force winds well inland, over 300 miles  north of where Helene landfalls. The good news for the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states is that we will have no issues from Helene as the center gets deflected west into the Tennessee Valley. Outside of some clouds at times Friday and into the weekend, we see no rain issues.

Meanwhile today we do have showery rains to deal with thanks to a cold front that runs from the Northeast all the way down to the Gulf Coast. The front will only slowly move eastward today keeping us in clouds and occasional showers. The showers aren’t especially heavy and rainfall amounts won’t be anything to write home about. Otherwise it is a cloudy-ish day for the most part with high temperatures mostly in the 70s.

The front will be pushing through tonight and then heading southward. Higher pressures will build across the Great Lakes and New England and acting as an effective block. This will keep Helene from shooting up the East Coast. The only issue is the northernmost fringe of rain will try and push northward from Virginia but it will hit dry air from the north and likely dissipate.

What is left will be some high level clouds and that will probably mask sunshine from time to time over the weekend. Other than that we do not have any rain in the forecast. The flow will become onshore again with the high to the north so we probably will be seeing coastal flooding issues at high tide. Friday highs will be in the 70s with lots of clouds.

Saturday we will likely see lots of clouds around and perhaps a break or two of sun. Sunday might be a bit better with some sunshine in the cards and perhaps less in the way of clouds. It won’t be a picture perfect weekend the chances for rain will be minimal. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the 70s though with the onshore flow, look for 60s along the coast.
