Helene Continues to Meander With Onshore Flow Into New Week

The remnant low of Hurricane Helene is still sitting in the Ohio Valley and not doing very much today other than rotating and drifting slowly to the east. Showery rains are showing up on radars from Tennessee northeastward to Western NY and Western Pennsylvania. We still have elevated risks for flash flooding in the Central and Southern Appalachians as folks there attempt to recover from the incomprehensible destruction that has occurred there.

Much of Southern New England to Southern New Jersey west into Pennsylvania sits in semi gloomy conditions. Clouds and an onshore flow continues today. Maybe skies brighten up in some places, maybe it doesn’t Perhaps there could be a shower of light rain or just drizzle in a few spots but not in others. The day will seem somewhat indifferent and most highs today won’t get out of the 60s.

We will see clouds around tonight and that risk for some spotty light rain showers or drizzle and lows will be in the 60s. We might get a little bit of a break Monday and while it will remain cloudy, some bright spots could develop. We will leave rain out of the forecast for the dayside at least. Let’s call it mostly cloudy for Monday with an ocean wind and highs mostly in the 60s to perhaps near 70 in some places.

Weather systems will finally start to move along from west to east Monday night as the remnant low of Helene finally slides eastward across the Mid Atlantic states and offshore. Some rain north of the low track is likely in Maryland Delaware into perhaps Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. It should move along and not be too problematic.

A cold front from the Plains will move east Tuesday into Wednesday. There won’t be much with it other than maybe some scattered showers Tuesday or Tuesday night and most of those will be to the north. Tuesday otherwise will be mostly cloudy with highs mostly in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The second half of next week should be better with the onshore flow going away and a more westerly flow aloft allowing for some sunshine to return Wednesday. Dry weather likely continues Thursday and Friday with sunshine likely both days along with seasonal temperatures. We might be able to carry that dry weather through next weekend. Models are trying to show another tropical system developing in the Northwest Caribbean and moving into the Gulf of Mexico but for now there is some uncertainty regarding this. The more westerly flow aloft argues for little risk to the Middle Atlantic and Northeast from any system that were to develop.
