A Little Less Gloom & Doom Today As Helene Remnant Low Remains to the South Better Weather Later This Week

The new work week begins and we seem to have the same players on the scene. High pressure is to the north and northeast while the remnant low and upper air trough that was Helene continues to linger for another day in the Ohio Valley. This puts us on the edge of doom and gloom and the radars area showing rain across Southern Pennsylvania southward. We expect that rain to stay mostly to the south though the northern edge could skim Southern New Jersey later today and into tonight. Otherwise we will call this a cloudy to occasionally partly sunny day with the best chance for any breaks of sunshine occurring in the afternoon and also it will favor points north and and Northeast of NYC into New England. Onshore flow continues for what seems like the umpteenth day in a row so most highs today will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The important development this week is the resumption of a westerly flow in the upper atmosphere. This will finally allow weather systems to move along from west to east. An approaching cold front moving across the Great Lakes, New York State and New England will be the first player in this change. This will finally force the remnant lows of Helene off the Mid Atlantic coast late Tuesday and Tuesday night.

The second thing this accomplishes is that we can finally break the persistent onshore flow pattern that has been locked into the Eastern US for much of the last 2 and a half weeks. All this leaves us with a mostly cloudy overnight and a mostly cloudy Tuesday. Any showers will probably pass to the south, unless one or tow were to sneak in which is not impossible. Tuesday highs again will be in the upper 60s to some lower 70s.

Wednesday brings a notable change as this cold front passes across NY and New England. Maybe there is a brief shower with front when it goes by but the bigger change will be the wind shift to the west. We will probably have the last of leftover clouds to deal with Wednesday along with some developing breaks of sunshine. The west wind should allow temperatures to reach back into the 70s.

We should be in a very good place Thursday and Friday with sunshine or at least some sunshine both days. Most highs Thursday and Friday. Instead of an east wind we will likely see a developing south wind which this time of year can be a warm wind given the still warmish ocean. Highs both days will be in the 70s. Another weather front looks to pass at some point over the weekend.
