Heat Humidity Chance Scattered Thunderstorms Next 3 Days For Long Island

The next three days on Long Island will certainly be beach or pool days or anywhere where you can stay cool. We are in the middle of a very tropical August air mass and that means high humidity. Temperatures will be heading up above 90 degrees away from the ocean and even the beaches will see temperatures in the 80s before any sea breeze takes hold.

The tropical air mass with high dew points makes for a very juicy air mass so we have to throw in the chance there could be some scattered downpours or a thunderstorm but where, when, or even if are always big questions. Yesterday we saw clusters of strong thunderstorms develop in the evening across New Jersey but they weakened as they moved eastward. The best approach is to put the risk in the forecast and wait for the radars to tell us what might happen later today.

I wouldn’t expect much to happen on the radars until later this afternoon so in the meantime we should be rain free for much of the rest of today.

Look for very warm and humid conditions tonight with most lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s except middle 70s in Western Nassau County. Overnight we saw some scattered thunderstorms move through parts of the area nearby. Given the tropical nature of the airmass, a passing downpour or an odd thunderstorm overnight can’t be completely ruled out.

Thursday will likely be the hottest day of the summer for Long Island when we take into account the entire island. Highs will reach the low and even middle 90s in Nassau and Northwest Suffolk Counties. Even the East End away from the ocean could see temperatures well into the 80s to near 90. Again the chance for scattered evening showers or thunderstorms need to be included in the forecast. Friday will be a repeat performance of Thursday and the chance again for late day thunderstorms. A cold front will pass offshore early Saturday and we could see some humidity relief arrive over the weekend as high pressure builds into New York state and New England. The weekend will see highs back in the 80s for both Saturday and Sunday and dew points will ease. Sunday should be more comfortable than Saturday and it should be no worse than partly sunny for both day.
