Frigid Air & Snow Ice Rain Threat Friday Night
Frigid Air & Snow Ice Rain Threat Friday Night
There are a few things to point out about the very cold air mass coming down from Canada. First off Thursday and Friday will be the 2 cold days with temperatures not out of the 20s on Thursday and probably no higher than the upper teens and low 20s on Friday. Wind chills will be down below zero and there could be some records set in a few areas Friday morning. Most of the area records are in the low teens to near 10 above so it is certainly doable.
VERY COLD AIR FRIDAY MORNING LOWS
VERY COLD AIR FRIDAY FORECAST HIGH TEMPERATURES
The cold air is going to pull out Friday night as low pressure moves into the Ohio Valley. Given the fact that that the air ahead of this system is going to be warm. Overrunning precipitation ahead of a warm front is likely to the develop and we could see snow developing here Friday night into early Saturday. In cases like this away from the coast, cold air is going to be very stubborn to get out of the way. This could set up for a period of sleet and then freezing rain for inland north and west areas for a time on Saturday. The magnitude of this remains to be seen and we won’t know until later in the week to see how much moisture we will be actually be dealing with. Also where the high goes is key. If the high moves off to our south then the transitional period will not be too long or too bad. However if the high goes out near or to our north, then we could see cold air wedged down the east side of the Appalachians longer. Weather models are not that far apart on this.
The overrunning pattern is extensive here and the flow aloft is strong southwesterly which would support this. Right now it is pointless to speculate about it other than the fact that we could see a burst of snow Friday night into Saturday morning followed by a transition to ice and rain and leave the specifics to play out for themselves over the next few days.
