FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE INLAND TONIGHT!
If you are in the northern and northwestern counties of New Jersey keep an eye on your thermometer as there is the possibility of some freezing rain or freezing drizzle. The satellite loop shows that there are clear skies just north of a developing area of light rain to the south. Winds are light north or northeast as the high to the north has not moved out offshore yet. Cold air may wedge in for a few hours. The precipitation to the south is light and spotty so my thinking is that there could be some pockets of freezing rain or drizzle where temperature drop below 32 or even into the upper 20s briefly. After midnight I would expect the temperatures to climb as winds turn more east over time and warmer air quickly takes over. This should not be a big deal. No advisories are posted at this time, nor do I expect that there will be. The steadier rain will probably not come in until let tonight or Tuesday morning and by then everyone will be in the 40s.
The bulk of the rain will come long after temperatures are well above freezing. Tuesday will be a rather raw day with on and off rain and temperatures in the 40s north and lower 50s in Central New Jersey. Eventually warm air will take hold Tuesday night and Wednesday and we should see temperatures rise into the 60s over the state on Wednesday. More rain is likely with the rain finally ending Wednesday evening by midnight at the latest.
Thursday through Saturday look dry with near or slightly above normal temperatures. Rainfall is forecast to be about 1 inch on average with some locally higher amounts possible over the next 2 days. Meantime watch your thermometer this evening in those northwest and northern counties.
