Coldest Air of the Season So Far 20s & 30s Tonight & Wednesday Night

Some Rain Wednesday With Sleet/Wet Snow Mixing In?

The coldest air of the season so far is moving in over the next several days and this is setting us up for widespread frosts and freezes over the next couple of nights. Freeze watches are going up for Wednesday morning for parts of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and we will likely see more watches and warnings later today. In the meantime today we still have some cloud issues thanks to yesterday’s cold front that has moved offshore. There is enough of a push of dry air to produce some sunshine today but highs will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s at best.

The frontal boundary will remain close by tonight so there will be clouds along the coast and this will keep temperatures up in coastal areas, probably bottoming in the upper 30s and lower 40s Wednesday morning but with clearer skies to the north and northwest most lows tonight into Wednesday morning will be in the low to middle 30s so some frosts and freezes are likely inland.

Wednesday we will see clouds around and we will also have low pressure developing just offshore. This low is off the Southeast US coast today and it will gradually move north and merge with the old frontal boundary. We will probably see some rain thrown back to the coast late tonight and Wednesday morning and clouds pushed further westward.

This is going to make Wednesday a cold day indeed with lots of clouds, temperatures in the 40s, and in some places from Coastal New Jersey to the Hudson Valley, Southern New England and Long Island, we will see some rain. In fact it is not impossible that we could see some sleet or wet snowflakes mixing in. Temperatures Wednesday will be in the 40s at best and in some places inland not much above the low 40s.

As the low goes by, we will see the coldest air coming in behind the system for Wednesday night into Thursday morning with widespread frosts and freezes and lows in the 20s inland and lower 30s along the coast. Thursday should be a nice day of sunshine with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Temperatures should continue to moderate Friday and Saturday back to average for this time of year and we should see some sunshine on both days. Sunday right now looks to start dry but we could see low pressure and some rain or showers by days end.
