Cold Weekend Rain Ends Snow Risk Minimal Sunday

Low pressure is developing this afternoon in Southern New England and headed for the Gulf of Maine. After what has been a mostly snowless month for Upstate NY and New England, we are seeing some snow over areas around the shores of Lakes Erie and Ontario, as well as Northeastern NY and Northern New England.

Snows should be significant in parts of Northern New England and Northeastern NY. This map combines two weather systems, the one from today and tonight and another for Sunday night into Monday though today’s puts down the bulk of this snowfall.

Meanwhile we wait for the last of the rain to end from west to east this afternoon and that is already occurring. The radars show lake effect already underway. We are also seeing snow breaking out to the north and northeast as low pressure starts to strengthen.

Breezy and colder conditions have already taken over from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Temperatures have eased into the 40s. Tonight skies should at least partially clear and most lows will be in the 20s except for the warmest urban locations where the lows will be close to 30.

Saturday will be a day of clouds and some sun and it is going to be cold. Most highs will be just in the upper 30s and lower 40s. The upper air pattern is active as we have several short wave troughs moving through the Northeast over the weekend and into early next week.

Whenever you have a lot of systems running around, no one system can get strong. In fact it is far more likely that we see these systems stay on the weak side beginning with Sunday and lasting into next week. Sunday’s low is probably a bit overdone on the NAM model today. We will through in the chance there could be some light snow or rain showers Sunday into Sunday night and I would not expect precipitation to amount to much. Sunday’s highs will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Next week sees more weak systems going by each day and longer range sees a more active pattern evolving as we head into December.
