Cold Week Ahead Next Storm System Due This Coming Weekend

Cold air returned to Long Island overnight and this morning we bottomed in the upper teens to near 20. The winds were strong and gusty overnight and they remain so at midday with temperatures in the mid 20s at the lunchtime hour. Wind chills are making it feel like it is down in the low teens though the winds have dropped off somewhat from what they were overnight. The radars are quiet however and we are at least enjoying mostly sunny skies on this cold winter afternoon.

Tonight will be another clear cold night with lows again down in the teens and wind chills in the single digits. We don’t have any precipitation to worry about while the cold is here so Tuesday will be sunny with less wind. We should break into the low 30s for afternoon highs. It will still be on the wind side through Tuesday night before high pressure finally moves over head and winds drop off on Wednesday. Another cold night is forecast for Tuesday night with lows in the upper teens to lower 20s.

The high moves overhead on Wednesday and Thursday and the cold will moderate with highs Wednesday back into the middle 30s and Thursday we should make it into the 40s as long as we have a fair amount of sunshine. There is a storm well off the Southeast US coast out in the ocean but we see no complications from this. Thursday’s temperatures should rise into the 40s.

Our attention then turns to the next storm system that will be moving from Texas northeastward into the Appalachians and then redeveloping somewhere off our coastline on Saturday.

The cold air mass over us now is long gone by the weekend however colder air will be lying to our north. We will have to see how much of this cold air tries to bleed southward and that will depend on whether that low moving from Virginia intensifies or not as it moves northeast. Right now it would appear that assuming the cold air stays north we will have a cold raw rainy Saturday into Sunday as that low moves northeast but we should keep an eye on the cold air and the high to the north, Highs over the weekend will be just in the upper 30s to around 40 if it winds up being a cold rain with snow to our north. We will take a stronger interest in the over the coming days as model figure out how this is all going to play out.
