Cold Is Done South Wind Next Few Days Showers Saturday Nice Warm Sunday

No doubt about it, this morning was cold! Lows were in the upper 20s and lower 30s from Northwest New Jersey to Northeast Pennsylvania and just about everyone in interior Upstate NY and New England had lows in the 20s this morning. Fortunately this was a one and done shot of cold air and high pressure moves offshore today. This creates a south to southeast wind and while temperatures this afternoon will warm to the 60s, the wind direction keeps temperatures in check. We are not worried about marine are creating cloud issues and dew points will be coming up from yesterday’s very dry conditions so I’m not concerned about brush fire risk going forward. Skies are going to be sunny today though there will be a bit of a smokey sky thanks to those Canada wildfires and the northwest flow aloft.

Radars are not an issue through Friday. Skies should be mostly clear tonight with most lows in the 40s to around 50. Friday finishes a mostly nice weather week with sunshine and highs reaching the mid to upper 60s along the coast but we should see highs reach the lower 70s inland. Some clouds could start to come in late in the day as we set up for the weekend.

Friday night clouds will continue to increase as a cold front begins to make progress across the Ohio Valley. At the same time we have moisture across the Gulf States that migrates to the Southeast US coast Friday. From this we see weak low pressure develop along the coast of the Carolinas. It likely takes an area of rain northward up the coast.

Rain from the northward moving coastal low moves up the coast Friday night into Saturday and notice that it cuts off just west of NYC while heavier rain moves over Long Island and Southeastern New England. Meanwhile the cold front to the west is sweeping east with some showers or perhaps a thunderstorm or two. It is conceivable that there could be a dry period between the two. Saturday highs will be in the 70s.

The front will pass offshore Saturday night so any showers will come to an end quickly from west to east and I expect skies to partially clear by Sunday morning. Rainfall amounts will not amount to much west of NYC and Coastal New Jersey where amounts will be half an inch or less however east of NYC across Long Island, Southern and Southeastern New England we could see amounts of 3/4 inch to 1.50 inches.

The front passes through Saturday night and that will leave us with a much better day and a much warmer day Sunday. High pressure to the west will build into the northeast and Mid Atlantic and we will have plenty of sunshine. That should allow us to produce highs in the mid to upper 70s and I think some warm spots could approach the 80 degree mark.

Next week is shaping up to be a dry week overall and it is not inconceivable that we could go without any rain not just during the week, but possibly right through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. We will be talking more about this in the coming days.
