Cold Front Brings Showers Later Friday Into Early Saturday Windy Chilly Weather Follows

Today we sit between two weak systems. One  is sitting offshore and you can see lots of clouds from this system. To the northwest of the coast is a weak disturbance moving across upstate NY and headed for Central New England. There is a little bit of precipitation with this in the form of some rain or snow showers but they are widely scattered and won’t amount to much.

Much of the precipitation that you are seeing on the radar isn’t reaching the ground or if it is, it is very very light. This area moves east and will diminish as we go through the day. Otherwise look for clouds and some breaks of sunshine with highs this afternoon ranging from the mid 40s around NYC to upper 40s and lower 50s Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey.

Meanwhile out to the west we see a large storm coming out of the Northern Plains and rotating around the Western Great Lakes. The circulation of this storm is very large and it is producing blizzard conditions in parts of the Plains where winds are gusting to over 50 mph at times. This storm is going to rotate around in that area today into Friday.

What we have is a giant arm that is rotating around a low that is moving northeast to north into the Great Lakes. With this arm is a wall of showers and those should arrive late in the day Friday and last into Early Saturday morning. Some snow will occur in upstate NY with the front and also behind it as a new low forms and takes over. The gradient will be especially tight and that means a windy and progressively chilly weekend with leftover highs in the 40s early Saturday and mostly in the 30s on Sunday. The lake effect snow machine looks to be turned on this weekend in a big way. Next week starts out dry and chilly and it looks relatively uneventful at least for the first half of the week. Weather models are trying to circle around late next week for a possible rain or snow event but frankly it looks underwhelming at this point. The block over Greenland has been strong and it has suppressed systems south and kept them weak. We don’t believe that pattern changes much next week.
