Cloudy Cold Sunday Ice Inland Monday
Next Storm System Monday Night Tuesday
The overnight weather system to the south did not push precipitation far enough north so the freezing rain/sleet event basically fizzled for most areas though for Southern New Jersey and points south there was enough there cause icing issues. When you don’t get the ice that is forecast that is a good thing not a bad thing. Now we move ahead stuck in clouds and cold air. Temperatures today should edge up above freezing along coastal areas but probably staying below freezing inland.
SATELLITE
I’m not expect much if anything at all precipitation wise today. The regional radars are both showing little if any activity. The satellite is loaded with clouds and with a northeast wind all day, clouds will dominate the weather scene with little chance of any breaks of sun.
F5 WEATHER RADARS
So now we move on to Monday where low pressure begins to move our way from the Gulf States. Bitter cold air is covering areas all the way south to the Gulf Coast and even down to the border with Mexico! It isn’t often that you see Winter Storm Warnings up for Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi & Houston all at the same time!
The next storm system takes a track to the west of us for the most part and even though it redevelops just to the south and east, there is no blocking high pressing cold air southward into the Mid Atlantic. That leaves us with warmer air coming in slowly. We have already seen the impact of that aloft.
Precipitation arrives during the day Monday from southwest to northeast. The cold air inland is going to be very difficult to dislodge thanks to the slow decaying of the cold air mass and the deep snow cover that exists.
Above and below we have put up what to expect precipitation wise at 3pm and at 10pm Monday. Notice that the freezing rain/rain line really doesn’t move much to the north. In fact it actually pushes a little south during the evening Monday.
With that all in mind look for freezing rain and rain down near the coast with sleet and snow increasing as you head north. Ice accumulation here will be a big deal inland where temperatures are going nowhere fast.
As far as snow is concerned this is a snowstorm for Central and Western Pennsylvania, Upstate NY and Central and Northern New England. 1 foot plus snows are likely in Western NY and Northwest Pennsylvania.
Monday night into Tuesday morning will be the worst of it before rain coast and freezing rain inland come to an end. Colder dry weather follows but we have another storm system setting up for Thursday.
Models are suggesting that this system could produce a significant front end thumping of snow because of the cold high to the north taking its time getting out of the way. The GFS model has a track that is furthest west of all the models yet even here the model suggests this cold produce a several inch thumping near the coast Thursday morning and more inland. Ultimately this will go to rain Thursday night as warmer air is drawn up the coast. Once this storm goes by we see tranquil but chilly weather conditions for next weekend.
