Late Saturday & Sunday Severe Weather Risk Beautiful Labor Day

Today is getaway day for the Labor Day holiday weekend. Overnight showers and thunderstorms will continue to shift offshore and we will be left with a day of changeable sky conditions. Some places may be sitting in clouds all day while areas to the north and northeast of coastal areas could see enough dry air to break out into partly sunny skies. Either way the onshore flow will keep temperatures today mostly in the 70s.

As we move along into the weekend it should be emphasized that much of the time it will not be raining but there will be two periods of risk for showers and thunderstorms. Two weather fronts will be passing through the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states. The first will come Saturday night so the dayside Saturday will likely be rain free.

The onshore flow bends around to a more southerly flow. Temperatures will rise, humidity will be high. We see highs reaching into the upper 70s and lower 80s. The day starts with clouds and then for most, transitions to partly sunny conditions. That sets up for thunderstorm activity as the front front crosses Pennsylvania.

While there always could be a renegade thunderstorm to develop well ahead of the front, for Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England the most likely time for thunderstorms will be in the evening and into the overnight. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the severe weather risk for late Saturday and Saturday night. Strong winds and heavy rains are the biggest risks.

Weather conditions should improve somewhat Sunday morning as clouds give way to sunshine however we have a second weather front that will move through late in the day. Behind the front we see a very cool and very dry air mass moving east across the Great Lakes and building south into the Ohio Valley. This leads us to the possibility of another round of showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk up and down the East Coast from Maine to the Carolinas Sunday afternoon and evening for the possibility of some isolated severe thunderstorms in the mix of general thunderstorm risk. Sunday temperatures will probably be warmer Sunday verses Saturday as we have more of a west wind and some sunshine ahead of the second front. Highs Sunday will be in the low to middle 80s.

Once the second front passes we will see humidity levels plunge as dew points drop to the 50s and even the 40s by Monday. Labor Day itself will be a beautiful day of sunshine, a nice northwest breeze and most high temperatures will be in the 70s. There are no weather issues with rain or thunderstorms whatsoever for the Labor Day holiday.

Much of next week will be dry with low humidity, near or below average temperatures and no rain for all of the work week. The next chance for any rain probably doesn’t come until next week though at this point we are unsure of the details as to how this plays out. The tropics are unusually quiet going into the Labor Day weekend which is rather unusual. There is almost always a tropical storm or hurricane running around on this particular weekend but this year things are on the quiet side.
