Chilly Sunday Springlike Warmth Next 3 Days

Strong Cold Front Arrives Wednesday Night into Thursday

The core of this quick shot cold air mass is moving out to the east rather quickly today so after a cold start this morning, temperatures will warm up nicely this afternoon. Southwest winds will take hold and we should see a good deal of sunshine. Afternoon highs should reach 40 to 45 in most places. Radars are nice and quiet and we don’t expect to see any rain until perhaps late Tuesday or Tuesday evening. Temperatures tonight won’t be as cold as last night and Monday morning lows will be in the mid to upper 20s inland and upper 20s and lower 30s along the coast and warmer urban locations.

The next 3 days we will see a transition to early spring-like conditions. Southwest winds will warm things up rather quickly. We will see sunshine on Monday and that should take temperatures up into the 50s. The only exception will be along south and east facing shoreline where winds will turn more southerly off the cold ocean. Places like Long Island, South Coastal New England and coastal New Jersey will likely be in the mid to upper 40s.

Tuesday we will see the southwest flow strengthen and winds will start to pick up a bit. 60s will be pushing northward through the Middle Atlantic and we could see highs reach the low 60s as far north as Northern New Jersey to about NYC. Once again the coast will have to deal with more of a south wind and temperatures along south and east facing shorelines will reach the 50s. Sunshine will give way to arriving clouds as a warm front approaches from the southwest.

A storm moving through the Northwest US today will reform in the Plains and head to the Great Lakes Tuesday night. A second low will form further south in the Central Rockies and then head into the Western Great Lakes Wednesday and from there to Southeastern Canada. From this low a cold front will eventually stretch southward creating severe weather across the Mississippi Valley to the Great Lakes Tuesday followed by another round of risk for the Tennessee Valley and the South Wednesday.

For our area from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and everyone in between, some showers are likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning followed by a short break during the day. Some sun could break through the clouds Wednesday and it will be a very warm day with highs in the 60s in many locations. A strengthening southwest wind will gust 30 mph or higher later in the day into Wednesday night ahead of a cold front.

A sharp cold front will bring showers and maybe a rumble or two of thunder Wednesday night along with gusty winds. The front will pass early Thursday morning. There is a quick shot of colder air behind the front that comes in rather quickly. Some areas inland might actually see a change to wet snow before it ends but this is a bit of a long shot and should not amount to much. Weather conditions will improve during the day Thursday with leftover clouds and some developing sun. Temperatures will settle in the upper 30s to mid 40s behind the front. Friday looks to be a dry day with sunshine and highs just in the low to middle 40s.
