Center of Henri Over Montauk Coastal Flooding Long Island Sound

Heavy Rains Into This Evening

The center of Tropical Storm Henri is  now over Montauk as of 10am and Long Island is experiencing heavy rains but the strongest winds are going to be confined to the East End. We are approaching a high tide on the North Shore and coastal flooding is expected as water piles into the sound and funnels back into the narrow shoreline of the western parts of Long Island Sound.

We see the bands of heavy rain moving westward back into Nassau County and beyond. The center is evident on the local Upton Radar and it will continue moving north northwest across the North Fork shortly and then inland in Southeastern Connecticut/Southwestern Rhode Island.

As far as the winds are concerned, while it will get gusty in Nassau County and Western Suffolk we should not see any winds that are unmanageable there. In Suffolk County wind gusts will be stronger especially over the East End which is closer to the center. The map below is forecast wind gusts at midday.

Heavy rain fell over parts of Long Island last night and everywhere this morning. Many areas have already picked up a couple of inches and we could see an additional several inches of rain with locally higher amounts.

Once the center moves inland into Connecticut and heads north northwest, we will see the bands of rain lift northward late today or this evening and most of the rain should be over with. The track to the east prevented something much worse from the standpoint of coastal flooding and strong winds so that is a big plus. Some leftover moisture will still be around Monday as Henri starts moving northeast and away from New England.
