Snow Continues Slowly Ending West To East Later Today And Tonight
Blizzard Warnings continue from Delaware to Maine along the coast and Winter Storm Warnings continue inland. This has ceased to be a forecast event and is now a nowcast event meaning that it is about looking at the window and watching the satellite, radar, and surface observations. Cold air is sweeping southward as temperatures continue to fall. We are in the teens to near 20 just inland of the coast from NYC northward, 20s and falling everywhere else. Snow rations are increasing now as temperatures fall adding to fluff factor in accumulations.
Judging from what has fallen so far these numbers should be hit especially to the east of NYC where it may snow into this evening before the snow finally falls apart. Instead of sweeping out from west to east the back edge will slow to a crawl. East of NYC the snow should just gradually fall apart between 4pm and 9pm while to the west the snow ends from west to east around midday. Some amounts of 20 inches or more are possible in areas to the east.
The storm signature is showing up nicely on the satellite pictures and radar loop. On the radar in the green echoes particularly in the darker green where snow rates are probably in the 2 inch or more an hour range. The western edge of the snow is back into all of Eastern Pennsylvania and should start showing movement to the east.

The storm is going to be moving northeastward to southeast of Cape Cod this evening. When the snow shield slows down just to the east of NYC and the Jersey shore, we will have to wait until the upper trough moves through before the snow ends.
Final snow total forecasts from the National Weather Service remain pretty much in line from yesterday. At this point it is just let the storm play out. As of 7am we have very few snow reports but we should see the numbers come in and we will post them as soon as NWS puts them up.
Let’s not forget the wind and the cold. Winds are a big factor today from the north at 20 to 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph at times. We have a windy and brutally cold night ahead of us with skies clearing out, winds continuing to blow with gusts of 20 to 30 mph and temperatures heading for the single digits to near 10. Sunshine with less wind is the forecast for Sunday with highs in the 20s. Warmer weather is coming for the week ahead as the January pattern breaks down for awhile.
