Arctic Air Arrives Saturday
The coldest weather of the season is going to be with us this weekend with arctic air about to arrive. Today we will see sunshine giving way to arriving clouds ahead of the arctic front. Temperatures will once again will not be out of the 20s. There could be some snow showers today but they should be scattered in nature. Weak low pressure is developing off North Carolina and that is going to be moving northeast. The Arctic front is sweeping down from the great lakes at the same time. The Carolina low goes out to sea but the arctic front will have a little punch to it. Like a summertime cold front, it should produce a line of moderate to heavy snow showers as it passes through the area between 3am and 7am Saturday morning. A quick coating to an inch is not impossible in a heavier squall.

Once that front goes through temperatures which will start the day in the 20s will finish Saturday in the single digits. All of this hits bottom Sunday morniing when we see lows around the area generally in the range of 0 to -5 with some spots especially away from warmer urban centers even colder.

Now comes the next storm system for Tuesday. The cold air pulls out Monday and temperatures will rise fairly quickly. That fast rise plus milder air coming in from the southwest will certainly bring in lots of clouds. The NAM model actually has some light snow breaking out during the day Monday.
The NAM model has a rather weaker view of the upcoming weather system for Tuesday and weaker means colder and more of front end thump of snow is possible if that is the case. We will explore that possibility later today.
