40 Days & 40 Nights Of Hardly Any Rain Ends Today

As Rain Arrives Ahead of Cold Front

It seems almost biblical that much of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England has not seen measurable rain for 40 days plus in some cases. For many weather observing stations in the region, the last time it rained was September 29th. We have an approaching front and it seems loaded enough to produce up to a half inch or so of rain in some places and that at least will help with wildfire conditions around the area.

A half inch of rain is a start but we have deficit of 6 to 7 inches to make up and that is going to take more than 1 cold front to accomplish. In the meantime satellite loops show clouds increasing from the west today and radars are actually rather loaded up with rain to the west. Temperatures today will top out in the low to mid 60s from north to south. Some areas inland may have a tough time breaking 60 as any morning sun fades away. Rain should arrive during the mid and late afternoon from west to east and it will be mostly gone by daybreak Monday.

Tropical Storm Rafael is meandering in the Central Gulf of Mexico and weakening rather quickly. None of its moisture will be getting involved with this cold front or another cold front that comes along later this week. Once the front passes we have another big high building into New England Monday into Wednesday and that will lead to a gradual cool down in temperatures, bottoming out Wednesday as the coolest day.

There are some model differences with the weather system for later this week and it is looking less and less like a robust cold front but it may still bring some rain and we will take it anyway we can get it these days. Monday sees gradual improvement with decreasing clouds and increasing sunshine. Highs Monday afternoon will be in the middle to upper 60s.

We may actually see temperatures go a little below average for a day or two as cool air from Eastern Canada drains southward from strong high pressure to the north. We should see sunshine Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 50s and Wednesday looks to be a sunny day with most highs just in the lower 50s making it the coolest day since way back last spring. For now we will forecast clouds and some rain arriving Thursday though again there is some doubt about how this plays out, and the weather improves by Friday.
