Much of the rain is now about to exit the coast this evening and it will be mostly dry into Sunday morning. A cold front is pushing offshore and low pressure is forecast to develop on the southern end of that front in the Southeast US and then northeastward passing offshore and to our east late Sunday afternoon and evening. The loop below is of the GFS model and runs from 10am Sunday to 1am Monday.
Snow develops around midday across Southern Pennsylvania and Maryland and then reaches NYC during the early afternoon, advancing into Southern New England mid and late afternoon. This is a fast moving system so it will not have time to produce big snow amounts but 5 to 8 inches is possible in the Winter Storm Warning area and 3 to 5 inches in most advisory zones.
When snow begins, temperatures will be near or a little above freezing. Near the coast it could start off briefly as rain but a quick change to snow is forecast as temperatures drop into the 20s once the snow becomes steadier. Temperatures will continue to fall and by the time the snow ends in the late evening to around midnight from southwest to northeast, temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s and headed down to the teens by Monday morning. Bitter cold air follows for next week as temperatures by Tuesday morning will be in the single digits and even below zero in colder inland areas.
