Winter Storm Warnings Inland Snow Sleet Rain Late Today into Sunday

Winter Storm Warnings are posted for areas inland from Northwest Virginpfa to the much of Western and Central Maryland, Central and NE Pennsylvania, Norrthern New Jersey mainly along and north of Route 80, the Hudson Valley, much of Connecticut except the south coast, Catskills, Hudson Valley, and much of Upstate NY and much of New England.

Snow forecast numbers from the National Weather service are showing in the above graphic. I believe they are a bit on the high side all the way around and there is the question of how much warm air moves in along the southern flank of the the snow area. Along the coast from Long Island to NYC and south to Trenton and Philadelphia, a coating to maybe…maybe..an inch seems plausible. Three seems to be battle going on with some models showing a warmer atmosphere and some colder. We are going to lean to the warmer solution and just watch the observations and the radars.

Precipitation is steadily advancing northward on the radars and you can expect precipitation to arrive later this afternoon from southwest to northeast. Along the coast, Long Island to Coastal and Southern New Jersey it will be mostly a rain affair though for Long Island there could be some snow in the mix this evening and overnight. Heavier snows will set up in the area of the Winter Storm Warning.

There are a couple of variables here that need to be watched. One is that a warmer solution creates lower amounts to the north and northeast of the coast. The other is that there is a quick burst of heavy snow at the onset that cools the lower atmosphere down and creates a quick surprise. One last one as the NAM 3km model and a few others show, is a change to snow on the backside Sunday as the low moves eastward. Models are all over the place with this so it remains unclear whether it happens to the extent this model shows or is it mostly in Upstate New York and across Southern and Southeastern New England.

This is my final call snow forecast which i issued yesterday to subscribers. I;m lower than the National Weather Service forecast as mentioned earlier. All of this winds down from west to east during Sunday afternoon and then weather conditions improve Sunday night into Monday. A major storm will bring heavy rain, screaming winds, the risk for flooding frrom heavy rain and melting snows, and coastal flooding later Tuesday into Wednesday and we will be talking about this after this storm system is done.
