Winter Storm Underway Winter Storm Warnings Tonight into Thursday Morning

Our first widespread winter storm of the season is revving up this evening and snow has been spreading northward faster by a couple of hours. It has been snowing hard this afternoon in Southern Pennsylvania east into New Jersey. The area of clouds continues to expand northeastward as the atmosphere is loaded with moisture.

Temperatures this evening are holding in the upper 20s and lower 30s. The wind is picking up but the wind direction remains favorable for now coming in at an 040 degrees to 050 degrees. This is helping to hold the cold air in. The strong high to north remains in place and that cold air is going to be very difficult to dislodge.

Radars continue to load up quickly and we have an expanding area of heavy precipitation from Southern New Jersey to Maryland southward into Virginia and North Carolina. The local radars are also seeing radar echoes increasing in coverage and intensity.

We have been following the HRRR and the NAM model and it seems the colder HRRR is matching up much better with the delineation between rain and snow so we will stick with that model as we go through the evening and overnight.

Snow will fall heavy at times this evening into the first part of tonight. Snow will be breaking out across Southern New England and become heavy there later this evening and overnight. The next thing to watch for is the thumping and how much snow we get out of that before we see some areas turn to sleet. If the HRRR is correct, areas around NYC and much of Western and Central Long Island will be dealing with a sleet storm from midnight into Thursday morning.

There are no changes to my snow forecast from earlier today. Areas that change to sleet or even rain obviously will have lower amounts while the all snow folks will likely see a foot or more before it is all over with Thursday morning. Areas from Northern New Jersey Long Island into Connecticut will see some leftover sleet changing to snow before it ends so an additional coating to an inch is possible. Otherwise weather conditions will improve on Thursday. Watch the temperatures tonight in your locale as we hover around the freezing mark in most places except the immediate coast. Cold dry air returns for Friday and for at least the start of the weekend.
