Wind Advisory Long Island Winds Gusting 40 to 50 MPH Late Today Tonight

Winds Ease Weekend

Wind Advisories are posted for this afternoon and tonight for Long Island. We have seen a number of wind events this month and this could be the strongest of the bunch and could have the most impact. Trees are developing leaves and that could put added pressure on trees and neighboring powerlines, Look for the potential for power outages.

This is going to be a long duration wind event with 40 mph wind gusts or higher lasting at least 12 to 15 hours beginning  around noon and lasting until 2 or 3am Saturday morning. The strongest winds will likely be from about 6pm to midnight as a strong upper trough moves through.

I could have pulled up an hour between 4pm and midnight and come up with the same numbers. Watch for some odd extreme gusts of 60 mph or more between 5 and 9pm as that upper trough passes and surface winds and winds aloft align themselves from the same direction and we see some mixing down to the surface.

As far as sky condition are concerned today we will see clouds with some breaks of sunshine with temperatures in the low to mid 60s. It will turn colder tonight with lows in the lower 40s by daybreak Saturday and of course the wind will make it feel like it is down in the 20s. The strong winds should ease Saturday morning. Look for sunshine giving way to arriving clouds Saturday. Highs will be in the lower 60s. A warm front goes by with a passing shower or downpour and night. Sunday we will call for partly sunny skies with highs in the low 70s in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County with 60s closer to the south shore and 50s along the coast. There is the outside chance for a brief shower Sunday as a weak cold front stalls overhead. Next week looks somewhat unsettled at least for the first half as we deal with a warm front cold front combination bringing a chance for showers later Monday into Tuesday. Other systems could follow later next week.
