Canada Wildfire Smoke Issues This Weekend

Overall Dry Father’s Day & the Juneteenth Holiday

Smoke is going to be an issue this weekend as the flow from the north is bringing down wildfire smoke from Canada. It is particularly strong this morning as an area of dense smoke (relatively speaking) heads southeast from Eastern Canada. The areas in the darkest brown will produce 60 parts per million or ppm’s in the atmosphere and these levels can make it tough for those of you who may have some breathing issues. This first area goes in and out today leaving us in just lighter smoke areas later on but we will likely see this again Sunday.

Sunday’s area looks at little less robust than today’s but we will monitor the situation in case it changes. The upper air flow continues from the north into Tuesday so there may be more smoke episodes. Meanwhile on the satellite loop we have a  low developing in the Gulf of Maine today and while that will mean for some showers and thunderstorms in Northern New England, we should be far enough south to avoid anything other than an isolated shower or thunderstorm today.

As far as high temperatures go, it will depend on how much sun we see as the satellite loop does show the backside cloudiness today. However there should be enough breaks of sun for temperatures to reach the mid 70s to around 80 degrees. It is a little below average but certainly manageable. Radars are showing bands of showers mostly in New England.

Moving along this weekend we have Sunday Father’s Day and that is looking like a rather nice day overall though again we will have sunshine through hazy smokey skies. The northwest flow continue so we will see nothing more than a few patchy clouds and only the smallest risk for a shower. Highs Sunday will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees from NYC north and low to middle 80s from Philadelphia south.

Monday brings the 3rd and final day of the holiday weekend and we will still be under the northwest flow so there might be some smoke issues again. Otherwise it should be a partly to mostly sunny Monday. High temperatures Monday will gain be in a range of upper 70s to middle 80s from north to south. Temperatures both Sunday and Monday will be cooler along south and east facing shoreline areas.

It is beginning to look as if next week is going to be dry all week long. An upper ridge will build across the Great Lakes and Northeast and this should suppress any rain well to the south in the Southeastern US and the Gulf States. The northwest flow will likely keep highs mostly in the upper 70s to lower 80s though it may warm up some after Tuesday and highs will be in the 80s Wednesday through Friday. Each day will be no worse than partly sunny with little or no rain in the forecast. There might be an scattered shower or thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon as an upper trough and weak cold front pass through but other than that it is pretty much a drama free week.
