Warmest Day of the Week For Long Island Highs Into the 80s!

Cooler Thursday Friday

Warm spring days on Long Island early in the spring but by mid May, the warming ocean temperatures and the right kind of wind brings in those warmer temperatures that are more common inland. We have such a day today with mostly offshore winds and a limited sea breeze that may take all day to work its way inland. We also have lots of sunshine in the forecast and that will take temperatures up into the 80s just about everywhere.

Areas in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County should see highs reach the low and middle 80s. Even the South Shore and East End will see highs reach above 80 before a sea breeze eventually develop. That sea breeze will likely work its way inland after 4 or 5pm and bring temperatures down especially in the eastern half of Suffolk County.

Stringing back to back days of 80s on Long Island is difficult and we will see a subtle but important change to the wind direction on Thursday. A weak “side door” cold front coming in from the east northeast will switch the winds Thursday to the east. It will be light east but enough to make a difference in temperatures.

The east wind is being steered by a building high in the Gulf of Maine so it will keep us in sunshine for Thursday. However high temperatures will be contained in the 70s away from the shore and along the shore 60s are likely.

While we are cooler here notice temperatures west and north of NYC do reach into the lower 80s where the east wind will have less of an impact. The same holds for Friday as highs will be a repeat performance of Thursday. We should have sunshine on Friday to finish off the week. A few clouds could come into the mix but for now we are leaving any mention of a scattered shower or a thunderstorm out of the forecast. The east wind should keep the atmosphere more stable.

LONG RANGE WEEKND OUTLOOK

On to the weekend where I think it will be no worse than partly sunny for both Saturday and Sunday. There is the chance for a scattered shower or thunderstorm late Saturday mainly inland and again late on Sunday as a cold front passes. Saturday and Sunday highs will be 70s.. Some inland areas in Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County could see highs reach above 80 degrees on Sunday. Overall it should be an ok weekend with no major issues. Even if you do get a downpour or a thunderstorm, it won’t last long. Next week looks mostly dry. Monday will be a little cooler with some sunshine and highs in the 70s to near 80. Then it is back into the 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday with sunshine both days.
