Heavy rain from overnight has for the most part moved out to the east as a cold front has passed southward. This is going to be the coolest day since early June thanks to a frontal boundary to the south across Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. North of the frontal boundary we are looking a a northeast wind and that will keep temperatures from getting out of the 60s in areas just north and northwest of NYC. Most highs will reach the lower 70s except for South Jersey and points southward where highs will reach the middle and upper 70s. We will see lots of clouds today but not much in the way of additional rainfall.

Satellite loops show Tropical Storm Debby meandering off the South Carolina coast today. The center has emerged back out into the open waters of the Atlantic where it may gain some strength. This is going to enhance the rains over South Carolina and North Carolina today into Thursday bringing additional heavy rains to an already water logged area. So far as much as 10 to 15 inches of rain has fallen and these amounts will likely double before it is all said and one.

Tropical Storm Debby will eventually make a second landfall along the South Carolina coast between Charleston and Myrtle Beach early Thursday morning. From there, Debby will begin to accelerate to the north and then turn northeastward up the Eastern Seaboard. However the track is going to be inland along the east side of the Appalachian mountains and that is bringing a bit of good news as far as another round of extreme rainfall for Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England.

The more westerly track means yes we will get rain beginning sometime late Thursday night and continuing on and off Friday into Friday night. There is the chance for some heavier thunderstorms in the mix and there is also the risk for severe weather Friday. The dayside Thursday will be cloudy with an east wind and high temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.

Another 6 to 12 inches of rain is forecast for the Carolina. The track further west means that coastal areas from Southeastern New England to Southern New Jersey could get 1 to 2 inches of rain. 2 to perhaps 4 inches for areas just inland of the coast to eastern Pennsylvania is forecast with amounts increasing as you go west. Much of Virginia and Central Pennsylvania into Central NY could see 4 to 6 inches of rain. Flash Flood watches will likely go up for the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states. Friday highs will be back up to the upper 70s and lower 80s. Of course humidity levels will remain high right through Friday.

There is good news of sorts for the weekend. As the “Debby” post tropical system heads northeastward into New England and Canada it will bring down nice dry Canadian air. Dew points will drop and we will see nice weather returning over the weekend. The rain should be gone by Saturday morning and we will see developing sunshine and highs reaching into the 80s. Sunday is looking mostly sunny and so is Monday with highs both days in the low 80s. Humidity levels will remain low into the start of next week with dry weather continuing for much of next week!
