Sunshine Near Record Highs Possible Cooler Next Few Days
Rain Sunday Hinges on Rafael
Today is going to be the warmest day of the week and we are on course to see record highs being set over a large portion of the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states. Low pressure way out in the Southern Rockies and Southern Plains begins to develop as the ridge in the Eastern US flexes some muscle. We do have a cold front that will move through late today and tonight nothing more than a wind shift and perhaps a few clouds. This leaves us with sunshine and a mostly west wind today. Highs will reach the upper 70s and lower 80s. Some places might have a shot at setting all time record highs this afternoon.

The front will pass and it will leave us with cooler air but temperatures will still be above normal Thursday through Saturday. We will see sunshine for both Thursday and Friday and nothing more than a few passing clouds as high pressure builds into the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states. Highs Thursday will be in the low to middle 70s.
Temperatures will take another step down on Friday but it will still be above normal as far as high temperatures are concerned. We should be in the mid and upper 50s for highs this time of year and Friday highs will be in mid to upper 60s or about 10 degrees above average.
Over the next few days we are going to see low pressure develop in the Southern Plains and head northward. Hurricane Rafael in the Northwest Caribbean could reach major hurricane status today before crossing Western Cuba and heading into the Gulf of Mexico Friday. Conditions in the Gulf of Mexico will become increasingly hostile which is good news for the Gulf Coast as Rafael will weaken before reaching any land area and eventually it will be absorbed by this developing non tropical storm system.
The low will head to the Great Lakes and the cold front will head east this weekend. There will be a little more moisture for this front to work with and that may mean we could see some rain arriving later in the day Sunday and lasting into the early morning hours Monday. There won’t be much rain from this front and it looks to be on the order of a tenth to a quarter of an inch at most.
Winds will be turning more northeast during Saturday and that will allow temperatures to cool off even further. High temperatures Saturday will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s and there should be a fair amount of sunshine. Sunday ahead of the front as winds start to turn more to the south, look for increasing clouds. Rain will arrive in Eastern Pennsylvania by afternoon and the spread eastward to Southern New England and Long Island in the late afternoon and evening. Highs Sunday will be in the low to mid 60s.
Next week the dry pattern resumes and the parade of mostly dry weather fronts continue. It will get a little cooler for a day or two and then warm up before the next front which looks to be next Thursday. There are no signs of the super dry and warm pattern breaking down anytime soon and as long as the Southeast US ridge remains, we will not see any significant rainfall or weather changes to sustained cold anytime soon.
