Snow For NYC? Snow will probably be seen tonight in what has been a rare appearance indeed this season. Some areas have seen some in the last 10 days north of New York City but the city itself has not had measuable snow yet for the winter. This is unusual but not unheard of. The record for the latest measurable snow is January 29th. Today is the only chance for measurable snow this week. If it doesn’t happen, and there is a fair chance it won’t, that record becomes a distinct possibility.
Just north and west and north and east of New York City there is a good chance for a quick shot of accumulating snow from late afternoon until late evening. At most it will be a coating to an inch or so unless a stronger squall develops somewhere. Here are the latest forecasts…both mine and the National Weather Service forecast.
SNOW FOR NYC
Systems like this can surprise in both directions. My rule is that if it is a snowy winter it surprises on the upside. If it isn’t it disappoints on the downside. The satellite loop shows a well defined upper air disturbance that is moving southeast from the Great Lakes. We have been pointing this out since the middle of last week that this could happen. Snow lovers are hoping it does so that at least they see something.
By the time you head for work you should be seeing snow on the radar loop below moving east across Pennsylvania. Look for sunshine to give way to arriving clouds and there could be a late day rain shower when the cold front moves through. The upper air disturbance follows in the evening. Temperatures will reach the 40s today and then drop behind the front. Snow or no snow for nyc, the temperatures will fall into the 20s Wednesday morning. Wednesday and Thursday will be dry and cold with sunshine and highs both days will be just into the 30s. Wednesday night lows will be in the teens to near 20.
Longer range we have what looks like a noreaster though it doesn’t appear to be anything too worrisome for Friday night into Saturday afternoon as low pressure heads to NW Ohio and redevelops off the New Jersey coast. Look for arriving clouds Friday with highs back into the 40s and then rain Friday night into Saturday afternoon with temperatures in the lower 40s. on Saturday. No snow for NYC from the weekend system as it will be too warm. In fact the rain snow line might push north of Albany before this is all said and done.
